Tips for Hair Transplant Recovery

Patient Reviews

Hair transplant surgery is a popular and effective way to restore your full head of healthy hair and get your self-confidence back. Thanks to innovations in hair transplant technology and techniques, the procedure can now provide patients with better results than ever before. However, if you want to ensure that your hair transplant recovery process goes as smoothly as possible, there are a few things that you should know.

Get Plenty of Rest

One of the nice things about hair transplant surgery is that it doesn’t require extensive recovery downtime. However, it’s still important that you get plenty of rest for the first day or two after the procedure. For the first 24 hours, you should let your body rest as much as possible. After that, you can gradually start taking light walks and easing back into your normal daily routine.

Wait to Wash Your Hair

Although you may feel the urge to wash your hair after your hair transplant procedure, it’s important that you avoid doing so for the first 72 hours. This will ensure that your scalp has time to properly heal after the surgery. After the first few days, it should be fine to gently wash your hair, but you shouldn’t apply the shampoo directly to the hair. Instead, mix the shampoo with water in a cup, then pour the mixture over your scalp and rinse it with clean water. Ideally, you should continue washing your hair this way for the first week of recovery.

Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity

After undergoing hair transplant surgery, it’s recommended that you refrain from strenuous exercise or physical activity for at least two weeks. Generally, you’ll want to avoid doing anything that will lead to sweating or significantly increase the blood flow to your scalp. A few examples of activities to avoid include:

  • Bending at the waist
  • Running
  • Sit-ups
  • Push-ups
  • Lifting weights
  • Playing sports

Don’t Wear a Hat

While you’re waiting for your hair transplant results to fully materialize, it’s natural to want to throw on a hat or some other form of headwear. But to ensure that your scalp heals properly, you should refrain from wearing any type of headwear for at least three days after the surgery. After that, you can wear a loose-fitting baseball cap, and after five days, it should be fine to wear whatever you want on your head.

Keep Your Head Elevated

It’s entirely normal to experience some swelling for the first week or two following your hair transplant procedure. To alleviate this swelling quickly, it can be quite helpful to regularly keep your head elevated during recovery. If possible, consider sleeping with your head in an elevated position for approximately one week after surgery.
