FUT Hair Restoration in New York

At New York Hair Restoration, we provide a multitude of different hair restoration solutions for individuals in the NYC area, with the most successful procedure approach, FUT (follicular unit transfer). Follicular unit transfer begins the treatment by implanting hair towards the balding area as strands of follicular units, spanning within groups of one to four strands in order to provide a natural living look. We consistently achieve results in which the hairline looks natural and is not visible as having been produced with our state-of-the-art hair restoration surgery.

Advanced hair restoration technology: It makes a difference

Some people are fearful about the follicular unit transfer procedure as a result of the unnatural look achieved with old techniques – techniques that we never use at New York Hair Restoration. The outdated “plug” technique looked unnatural, with the transplanted hairs in rows, like doll’s hair, and was very obviously made by the use of surgery. A new approach to New York FUT hair restoration.

Older hair transplant techniques were considered traumatic, causing patients to leave the treatment with their heads head wrapped in bandages, enduring significant bleeding and pain. With our modern follicular unit hair transplant technique, your procedure requires only a hat and headband when completed. You can shower and shampoo your hair the day after your hair restoration surgery.

We make hair restoration comfortable and discreet

Our hair restoration procedures are performed under local anesthesia. Many patients need thousands of hair follicles transplanted in one day. In our facility, you will have the ability to relax, watch TV or a movie on our flat-screen television, surf the Internet, listen to music, or just simply take a nap while time passes. During your procedure, we provide refreshments and lunch for longer hair restoration procedures. You will be in a private treatment room, resting in a soft, luxurious chair throughout your procedure.

The frontal hairline shape is marked, and the extent of lowering and filling is discussed before surgery.

What is the FUT procedure like?

When you arrive for your hair restoration, you will be oriented towards several activities throughout theday. Your paperwork and surgical consent forms are reviewed. Dr. Jacono will review your personal goals for hair restoration and answer any questions. With a mirror, the hairline you discussed in your consultation will be considered, with the outline drawn on your scalp for your final approval. He creates other markings to delineate the extent of the procedure. You will have a chance to examine and discuss every detail before your procedure starts. He then takes high definition (HD) photographs that become part of your permanent medical record.

A focus on your comfort

Sedatives are administered to relax you before the start of the hair restoration procedure, but you may elect to be fully alert. The hair follicle harvest is performed in the same room as your hair surgery. We believe this is helpful because we can explain what we are doing, discuss the density and quantity of hair grafts available to work with, and answer any questions that arise during the procedure.

Meticulous attention to detail means superior results

The permanent hair transplant procedure takes time due to the meticulous nature of the process. The length of the procedure will reflect the number of follicular units to transplanted to a new location on your scalp. Sessions to place less than 1000 grafts can be finished by mid-day, while more extensive sessions, of 2,000 to 2,500 grafts, will take the entire day to complete. It takes time, training, and artistry to create a genuinely natural-looking outcome.

NYC surgeon Dr. Jacono has achieved recognition for his excellent work as a facial plastic surgeon and hair transplant specialist. Harvest technique with FUT

The donor tissue is removed from the scalp in a single thin strip for minimal scarring. The location of the donor area is carefully selected as a region with maximum hair density that is genetically stable and will not fall out over your lifetime. The hair on the back of the head is not genetically programmed to bald.

The hair in the area to be removed is clipped 1 mm short. The uncut hair will then thoroughly cover the donor area, and you can get back to work and usual activities without delay. Our FUT technique involves closing the donor area with absorbable sutures that will not require removal and are naturally absorbed by your body. Dr. Jacono does not use staples for the incisions, as he doesn’t believe it heals as well.

The donor site for hair follicles is shaved and then harvested and sutured with plastic surgery techniques. The remaining hair covers the incision, so it is undetectable immediately, as shown in the pictures.

The donor tissue is directly placed into a holding solution consisting of chilled Ringer’s lactate solution, which closely mimics the body’s natural fluids. This maximizes the survival of the grafts while they are being held outside the body.

Incisions and scarring in modern FUT hair restoration

Thin strip harvesting produces a linear scar. The appearance of the scar can be a significant concern for those who want to wear very short hair. The vast majority of people who undergo strip harvesting have a thin, minimal scar, easily concealed by the hair above, even directly after the hair restoration procedure. In many instances, the scar may be almost invisible, except with careful inspection. If you want to avoid the scar, you may be a good candidate for FUE (follicular unit extraction).

Judicious planning and the most advanced surgical techniques can reduce your concerns about scarring. By limiting the width of the strip to be taken and avoiding putting any tension on the incision site, the scar is typically almost imperceptible. To avoid multiple scars, some surgeons who perform strip harvesting employ a single scar technique even if multiple procedures are performed. We use advanced dissection techniques at the incision line, reducing the risk of causing damage to the hair follicles.

Stereo-microscopic dissection

At New York Hair Restoration, we use stereomicroscopes which enable 3D viewing of the hair follicles for an exceptional level of accuracy in preparing the follicles for transfer to a balding or thinning area. In follicular unit transfer, the individual follicular units (each having one to four hairs) are meticulously removed from the donor strip in their naturally occurring groups under strict stereo-microscopic control. The follicular unit grafts are then sorted into groups containing either one, two, three, or four hairs, and are stored.

Creating the recipient sites

Recipient sites are created with a fine instrument, the size of a 19-gauge hypodermic needle. The recipient sites must parallel the direction the hair grows naturally from your scalp. This technique enhances the natural and aesthetic appearance of your new hair. Recipient site creation is a critical aspect of hair restoration surgery and requires extensive experience to perform correctly. The sites are created around your existing hair, with no need to cut it. This is particularly helpful, as your hair will camouflage the restored area during the early post-op period.

Placing the hair grafts

Single hair follicular units are placed along the front of your hairline, creating a soft, natural appearance. Two, three, and four follicular units are used to fill in the center of the forelock area for maximum fullness. Placing the follicles is the most time-consuming aspect of hair restoration, as placement is an exacting process. Meticulous care is needed to achieve a natural-looking outcome.
