FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
While minimally invasive follicular unit extraction (FUE) offers several advantages over the traditional strip excision and follicular unit transplant (FUT), there are several challenges with FUE. Because of the thickness and resistance of the skin and underlying soft tissue, it is important to determine the depth of penetration in order to dissect and liberate the graft with minimal trauma. The ideal type of excision is a very sharp cut used to penetrate the skin and gentle dissection of the hair follicle to liberate the fat around the hair shaft. This ensures maximal yield following grafting.
How are the Follicles Extracted?
The ideal FUE device should allow the flexibility in dissection technique. Additionally, native hair follicular units typically have a conical shape with splay at their base. Thus, in order to capture the entire unit without traumatizing the follicle, the diameter of the punch must be increased. Increasing the diameter of the punch as you go deeper will increase the risk of traumatizing surrounding follicles.
We are pleased to offer the WAW FUE System, which utilizes a dull and sharp punch to penetrate the skin in a less traumatic fashion. It has a trumpet shaped punch that can both oscillate and rotate. This allows deeper penetration to the shaft of the hair without damaging the hair follicle, which is essential to growth of the hair once grafted to the recipient site. The extraction device also utilizes a suction effect during the punch which increases extraction speed and reduces procedure time. The WAW FUE system has the lowest transection rate of all FUE devices, less than 4%.
What is WAW FUE System?
The WAW FUE system utilizes a uniquely shaped extraction device which mirrors the shape of the follicular unit, thereby allowing you to extract a higher number of high-quality grafts without having to use larger diameter punch sites. The WAW FUE system utilizes punches of 0.8 to 0.9mm which minimizes the risk of visible scarring at the extraction sites.
The WAW FUE system allows Dr. Jacono to obtain a higher number of hairs per graft, with the lowest transection rate and faster harvesting of the grafts. This state-of-the-art device is proving to be quite impressive!
