What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

A common question Dr. Jacono receives on a regular basis is what is PRP (platelet rich plasma) and how does it help with hair loss.

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP as it is also known as, considered to be a revolutionary treatment that consists of a high concentration of rich platelets created from the patient’s own blood. This high concentrated platelet rich plasma is then injected into the scalp to help stimulate healing of hair follicles that have begun to minimalize. The stimulated tissue helps to restore healthy tissue and enlarge the damaged follicles helping restore hair growth in the treatment area.

These rich platelets are found naturally within our body’s blood stream and tissue. They play the role of healing the damaged tissue in the treatment area as well as encouraging stem cells that are also naturally found in our body to move to the damaged tissue site and help with repairing the damage.

Hair Loss Treatments with PRP

New York PRP Treatments

Part of a small group of hair transplant surgeons in New York, Dr. Jacono uses PRP to help maximize hair growth in patients who receive a Neograft hair transplant and as a standalone hair regrowth therapy for patients who are starting to show early signs of hair loss and thinning hair.

While platelets are naturally found in our body, the platelet rich plasma contains 3 to 5 times the number of the normal platelets already present. This high concentration plays a key role in new hair growth as it contains bioactive proteins, VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factors), PDGF (platelet-derived growth factors), and TGF (transforming growth factors) that all aid in healing hair follicles and the possibility of hair growth.

How is PRP Treatments Used?

There are three main ways that Dr. Jacono uses PRP injections within his hair loss therapies and treatments.

One hair loss therapy involves using just the PRP injections as a standalone procedure to help reduce hair loss in patients with thinning hair. As it repairs the minimizing hair follicles it helps to restore hair growth and restore density to the treatment area. This treatment works best for patients who are showing the early signs of hair loss as it does not have any effect on areas of the scalp that are completely bald with no hair growth at all.

Dr. Jacono also uses the PRP injections in conjunction with both Neograft hair transplantations and standard strip hair transplant surgeries. The PRP is injected into the scalp where the new hair grafts are being located to help encourage the tissue to heal faster with less scar damage. This helps to improve the percentage of the transplanted hair follicles to grow faster and with thicker density.

Another way that Dr. Jacono uses PRP injections is by adding ACell® to the PRP serum and injecting into the treatment area as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with a hair transplant procedure as well.

What is ACell®?

ACell+PRP Injectable TreatmentsACell® is a cellular regeneration product that is FDA approved as a wound healing agent. It is created from porcine as a powder substance which is then mixed with the patient’s own stem cells. The ACell® is then combined with PRP and injected into the scalp of men and women who are suffering from hair loss and thinning hair due to alopecia areata, hypotrichosis, and non-hereditary hair loss. Dr. Jacono also uses ACell®+PRP injections for patients who had previous hair transplants and want to increase hair density without undergoing additional hair transplant surgeries.

As the injected treatment areas absorb the PRP and ACell® solutions, damaged and minimalized hair follicles begin to repair and become healthier and increase the size of the follicles. This will lead to a more robust hair growth in the treatment area and in many cases a thicker density to the hair growth.

Another benefit to adding ACell® with PRP injections is that it extends activation of dormant follicular stem cells for up to 18 to 24 months. This allows for the opportunity of additional hair regrowth during that period. While ACell® is not FDA approved as a standalone hair loss treatment, when combined with PRP therapies as a regular regimen, patients see a lot of benefits that include:

  • Protection from additional hair loss during the treatment regimen
  • Non-hereditary hair loss treatment for both men and women
  • Helps to repair damage from Alopecia Areata or hair loss caused by stress
  • Restores hair to the eyebrows that have decreased hair growth known as Hypotrichosis
  • Increased hair density for patients who had prior hair transplant surgeries
  • Hair loss treatment substitute for men and women who do not want to take Propecia or Rogaine

What Results can be Expected from ACell® + PRP Injections

Most patients experience new hair growth within 4 to 6 months following their ACell® + PRP injections. They also see thicker hair and more hair density in their treatment areas over a period of 12 to 15 months. Hair is noticeably denser and will feel thicker for most patients. The results can last up to a year and with a regular injection regimen, the results can continue to exist without further hair regression occurring.
